About Contact East
History
The first Contact East took place in 1975, and has been held approximately every two years since 1982. The early editions of Contact East were produced by the Touring Office of the Canada Council, and were held annually until 1982, when a Steering Committee, composed of representatives of the four Atlantic Provinces took over the management of the event. In 2001 Contact East was managed by the Atlantic Presenters Association in co-operation with the four Atlantic Provinces.

Contact East is presently presented by a committee of the Atlantic Presenters Association and a local host theatre.

There has been some, at times heated, discussion as to the actual times and places of the various Contact East conferences, but the following is the best available information as to where and when Contact East took place (any corrective suggestions would be welcome):

Contact East is about music, it’s about dance, it’s about theatre, it’s about bringing the behind the scenes business of the presentation of the performing arts to Atlantic Canada stages.

While not as well known as its younger cousin, the East Coast Music Awards, Contact East is, however, a vital crossroads of the performing arts industry in this region, where performers and their representatives get to interact with the people who present them. Although parts of the event, the workshops, clinics and round table discussions are strictly industry affairs, the general public is invited to attend the various showcases which take place during the event, showcasing artists from the four Atlantic Provinces, and from other parts of Canada.
